When I was 22, I was in ministry school, learning about God, trying to trust the Lord in my healing journey, and doing everything I could to learn how to heal. A few years prior, the Lord had told me that He wanted to heal my heart and I thought that meant I had to heal myself. The issue was, I didn’t know how to heal.

So here I am at 22, crying out to the Lord and He tells me this, “You are trying so hard to avoid your pain. The goal is not to avoid your pain, but to learn how to move through it.”

Looking back, I realize that I had been learning about healing, but not actually allowing myself to be seen in my pain so that I could receive the healing I needed. I had been subconsciously running away from my pain. I was complaining to God that I was hurting, but I didn’t trust Him to sit in the pain with me actually to heal.

I spent the next three years diving deep into facing my pain head-on. I learned that in order to get free from my deepest pains, I would have to be willing to see, hear, and validate my pain. And not just one time, but over and over and over again. Because let’s face it, pain happens to us all and it’s not a one a done thing.

What this did, was it helped me build a relationship of trust with myself. It taught me that I am trustworthy and strong. It showed me the most delicate and genuine places of my heart. Places that I had hid in myself to self-protect. It showed me who I was beneath all the pain I had experienced in my life. And what I saw was a beautiful person who just wanted to feel seen and loved. And I realized I get to be that for her. I get to see and know and love her, in any circumstance.

Look, I know that hearing someone say “Face your deepest pains and you’ll be healed!” isn’t exactly thrilling. You might be thinking “How in the heck did you get there” or “Why would I want to face my pain? It’s too much.”

Trust me, I’ve been there. But I promise you that learning to heal and create trust in yourself is one of the best decisions you will make. Because it’s going to help you see yourself. It’s going to reveal who you truly are, beneath all your pain. And if you let it, it will bring you closer to those around you and to God.
