Friends, this blog has been a dream of mine for quite some time. It's been a long time coming and I'm so excited to share my thoughts with you! Grab your favorite coffee or tea and let's connect!
Lately I’ve been noticing more beauty. I’ve been putting my focus more on what’s going well, rather than what’s going wrong. I’m learning, there is almost always something going wrong while something else is going right. I’m trying to allow both to exist.
Both the stress as well as the beauty. It’s a tough tension to hold. Especially if you are someone who spends a ton of time noticing what’s not going right. Aka, me. But, lately I’ve been challenged by the Lord to see the good just as much as the not so good. Here’s a bit of what I’ve gotten out of this process so far.
You know what’s beautiful? Loving someone in spite of their mess. Choosing in when you want to choose out. Being consistent with another even when you’re struggling yourself. Bringing what you have even when what you have is small. Being brave.
Being able to choose love over judgment. Choosing to listen over being heard. Being present over being distant. Letting another know you are struggling and receiving their love and comfort. Allowing yourself to be listened to. And giving the same in return.
When we choose in, to relationship, to feeling, to love, we receive even more in return. We build up instead of tear down. Honor instead of disrespect. Celebrate instead of gossip. Connect instead of disconnect. Love instead of hate.
Things I’ve been noticing I love lately. The slowness of a morning when the week has been chaos. Sitting in the stillness of the day and feeling at home. Being so worked up and choosing to release it all and feel. The sunshine. Kids running to squeeze you tight when you walk through the door. Feeling the excitement they exude as they run toward you. Tight hugs, movie nights with good friends, a warm cup of tea on a cold day. Good coffee.
The sun coming out after 2 weeks of rain. Getting to drive my car after 5 weeks of it not running. The excitement in a hello from a good friend. Sharing experiences with those I love. Doing puzzles with others. Simply existing with others.
So often, we focus on what’s not going well. What’s causing problems, what needs to be fixed, where we need to do better. But as I’m learning, it’s also important to be noticing what’s going well. There’s a balance, between where you are and where you want to be. What needs work still and what you’ve already done the work for and are living in now.
I’m learning it’s not always black and white. In fact, most of life is very much in the gray. We are always in process. Good Lord help us. We are always struggling in one area and doing really well in another. And both can exist. That’s what I’m learning. Life can both be super sweet and encouraging, and also really hard and stretching. We can feel both grief and relief in the same moment. Both frustration and ease. Both sadness, and joy. That’s being human.
