Resources That Have Helped Me

Here are some resources I’ve loved and have helped me over the past 6 years on my health journey.

1. The Book and Workbook How We Love, by Milan and Kay Yerkovich

How We Love is a book based on the attachment theory and includes the ways we as humans learn to love based out of pain and unmet needs in childhood. It goes into detail of how we learn to love through pleasing, avoiding, vacillating, controlling, or being the victim.

What I loved about this book is that it helps you understand how our childhood can affect us as adults in our relationships. It was truly an eye opener for me and continues to be a resource I go back to. The book has a lot of tools that help you to better understand yourself and your spouse, if you are married. The book is for marriages originally, but can be read as a single as well.

The How We Love website also has some resources, like the feelings list, and two quizzes. One quiz is to understand what your love language is, and the other is understanding how secure you are; The Secure Connector Quiz.

2. The Body Keeps The Score

The Body Keeps The Score, by Bessel van der Kolk is a book full of studies on how trauma effects the body. This book has been a hot topic for the last couple of years and I finally decided to dive into last year. I will say it has a lot of big sciency words that, at first were hard for me to grasp, but eventually I got used to it. It has a lot of stories and research studies in it.

What I got out of this book is that the body actually does hold onto trauma and pain. Our brains and bodies expect what they’ve experienced and if pain and trauma is what they’ve experienced, they will continue to search and respond to it. The book confirmed for me a lot of what I had been learning on my own from the Lord. Our bodies hold onto trauma even when the trauma has passed, it doesn’t just go away on it’s own.

The book also opened up a wide range of possible ways to heal the trauma. Bessel gives research based results of different tools that help heal trauma with real results. Overall, the book was really helpful in helping me understand the affects of trauma on the body and how to get help. What helps and what doesn’t help, etc.

3. The Connected Life Podcast and Content

The Connected Life Podcast has been a favorite of mine for the past 3 years. Abi and Justin Stumvoll are Life Consultants in Redding, Ca and they do online courses as well as host a free, weekly Podcast. They do a course called Living Fully Alive as well as mini courses, like The Father Series, The Compassion Project, and The Pathway To Freedom.

What I’ve loved about this the Stumbvolls is their honesty about life and relationships. They often share stories and laugh and I find myself laughing along with them. As well as learning so much about relationships, the affects of trauma, and God. They are hilarious, brutally honest, and lovely.

If you’re wanting some good connection, laughs, and help with pretty much anything relational, give them a listen! Also, check out their other resources. They are amazing people and so are their friends they do life with.

4. The Alive & Free Program and Podcast

The Alive & Free program is so good friends. I did this program with Sammie and Spencer Robbins back in early 2021 and grew a ton. They are amazing people that I continue to learn from.

Their program helps women and men now, with connecting with their pain and getting the healing they need. When I did the program they would do weekly live calls as well as pre-recorded content on things like, understanding pain, codependency, getting connected to your little self, and encounters.

It was so helpful to not be doing this journey alone, and they were teaching on things I had already been learning with the Lord. Also, having a community of people was super helpful!

Check them out here! They also have a free podcast and mini courses on things like dating, healing body shame, triggers and rejection. They also just launched a new program for aspiring coaches, called Coach Launch!

5. The Heart Of Dating Podcast

The Heart of Dating Podcast by Kate & JJ Tomlin is a super good resource for singles and people who are dating! I’ve loved listening in to Kate’s advice before she met JJ, as well as following her journey into dating, engagement, and recently marriage to JJ Tomlin!

Such a fun podcast to listen into and they often bring in other people to chat and tell stories as well. Check it out here.

6. The Book Boundaries

The book Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend was super helpful for me as I started going on a health journey. I learned that I was not good at setting boundaries and knowing myself. I never said no or stood my ground, which lead to people walking all over me.

Learning to have healthy boundaries has been a journey for me, and something I am still continuing to learn as the seasons change. But this book really helped open the door to me understanding boundaries and myself better.

Thanks For Reading Friend
