What To Do When You’re Feeling Discouraged

Feeling Discouraged

Feeling discouraged can really bring a person down. You might feel sad and alone in something you’re starting. Maybe you’re doing something you’ve never done before and it feels daunting. I think it’s normal to feel like you have no idea what you’re doing when you first start something new. But when we let the discouragement and disappointment settle in, that’s where we get stuck.

You Are Not The Only One

If you’re feeling discouraged, you are not alone. Building a business is a lot more work than I anticipated. There’s been many days I’ve thought “what in the world was I thinking when I decided to start a business?” I’ve said many times to friends “I have no idea what I’m doing.” But somewhere between the I have no idea what I’m doing” and “let’s jump in full force without any understanding of how to do this” I was met with disappointment.

Disappointment with how things look, disappointment with what I thought it would look like, and disappointment in how long it’s taking to get things going. And in the disappointment I was met with feeling unmotivated to keep going. And within the feelings of being unmotivated, a lie snuck in that said “you’re never going to do this right, so why even try?”

This Feeling Didn’t Start Here

Ooof. That one hits deep. Not just because it is such a discouraging thought, but because the feeling runs deeper than this moment. It runs further back than just this past year of beginning something new.

This lie of “you will never be good enough, so why even try” came in in many circumstances as a little girl. It came in when I would have to present my thoughts to an entire third grade class. It came in when I would ask for something or something was promised, there was huge hope and excitement, and then it never actually happened. This “you’re not good enough” lie has a long history in my life.

And the problem is, I actually gave that lie permission to stick around. I partnered with it as truth. My circumstances told me that it was true as a little girl, and over and over again I have allowed space for that lie to be solidified in my life as truth.

So it’s no wonder that when I would choose to step into something so new and unknown as starting a business, this lie would creep in, “see, you really aren’t that good at what you do. You don’t really know what you’re doing. You should just stop trying, it’s never going to end up how you want it to.”

Where Do Lies Come From?

Lies come straight from the enemy. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy, therefore anything that comes to steal your confidence, your peace, or destroy what you’re working so hard for, comes straight from the devil. If the thoughts you are standing on are not giving you life and abundance, they are probably stealing from you.

Feeling discouraged is not from God. And it’s most likely holding you back from being and pursuing being your full self. That sounds like the devil. But don’t let the enemy keep you in discouragement. You get to choose the thoughts you stand on. So are they going to be ones of discouragement and fear? Or are they going to be ones that bring you life, excitement and joy? You get to choose.
