Friends, this blog has been a dream of mine for quite some time. It's been a long time coming and I'm so excited to share my thoughts with you! Grab your favorite coffee or tea and let's connect!
It’s okay to take a break and rest when you are feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes we need to take time away from the things that are causing us stress. In today’s world, social media is in constant “hustle mode.” It’s easy to get caught up in the rat race of trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing. The majority of what we hear daily is all the things we should be doing. But is rest and slowing down something we’re initiating often?
One minute you’re excited about taking the entire day off, resting in your pj’s, and lounging on the couch all day, and the next minute you are dreading doing nothing. All the thoughts and feelings you’ve been avoiding start rearing their ugly head when we start to rest.
What if we do this today instead? And if I don’t do that thing today, everything will fall apart. I have to get that done, I’m going bananas just sitting around doing nothing!
Maybe it’s just me, but resting lately has felt more difficult. I’m managing my own work hours, trying to keep up with friends and family, and building a business on the side. Who has time to just rest?
But, this week I was reminded that when I don’t take time to rest, my body will eventually demand it. Whether that’s coming down with a bad cold, aches and pains, poor sleep, or other health problems, our bodies will start shouting if we don’t take time to rest.
Our bodies store energy and stress when we don’t have time to release them, and eventually, that stored energy and stress turns to anxiety, less sleep, pain in our body, or a heightened amount of emotion and triggers.
Rest can sometimes feel uncomfortable when we are in a season that takes up so much time and energy. But it’s okay to feel uncomfortable at times. It’s okay if emotions and thoughts arise when we pause to rest. It’s actually pretty normal.
The great part is, is that the more we integrate rest into our daily life, the more our bodies have time to release stress and tension. And the more we have time to release stress and tension, the less we will have big emotional reactions.
Our triggers will lessen and we will feel more connected to ourselves. And when we feel more connected to ourselves, we can feel more connected to those around us. We have more capacity to be present, do hard things, and enjoy the things and people around us.
